Study Notes
Vacuum Distillation
- Distillation under reduced pressure
- Used when undesirable to reach the normal boiling point of the distillate
- Useful when the boiling point is high, or a heat-sensitive material is present
- Vacuum pump reduces pressure, allowing the mixture to boil at a lower temperature
- Can be potentially violent and unpredictable, leading to 'carryover' - liquid rather than vapour
Distillation - Applications
- Manufacture of Whisky
- Irish whiskey uses 3 pot stills
- Brandy is distilled from fermented juice
- Rum is distilled from fermented juice of sugar cane
- Manufacture of spirits
- Solvent recovery from oil after extraction
- Essential oil extraction from leaves and seeds through steam distillation
