Rule of One, Few, and Many
- Rule of One: One person rules the state
- Rule of a Few (Oligarchy): A small group of people rule the state
- Rule of Many: A large segment of the population participate in governance and decision-making, or vote to elect leaders. This is also called democracy.
Types of Government
- Autocracy: Supreme power is concentrated in one person's hands; no legal restraints, no consistent citizen control.
- Monarchy: Rule by one member of a family (dynasty); power and authority. This may vary from purely symbolic to restricted.
- Constitutional Monarchy: The monarch's power is partial, restricted, or complete.
- Dictatorship: Ruled by one person or group, often a political party, with complete power.
- Authoritarianism: Strict enforcement of obedience to authority, often at the expense of individual freedom; closely linked to dictatorial rule.
- Oligarchy: A small group of people rule and are often connected through family. This is a subtype of "rule by a few."
