Study Notes
Types of Connective Tissue
- Connective tissues are categorized into three main types: Supporting Connective Tissue, Connective Tissue Proper, and Fluid Connective Tissue.
Supporting Connective Tissue
- Comprises bone and cartilage.
- Bone, also known as osseous tissue, is a vascular tissue made up of collagen fibers.
Types of Cartilage Tissue
- Three types include Hyaline cartilage, Elastic cartilage, and Fibrocartilage.
Hyaline Cartilage (Articular)
- Found at the ends of long bones, in the nose, trachea, larynx, and costal cartilage of ribs.
- Absorbs compressive forces to provide cushioning.
Elastic Cartilage
- Located in the external ear (pinna), epiglottis, and eustachian tube of the ear.
- Provides rigidity while maintaining elasticity.
Fibrocartilage
- Present in intervertebral and interarticular discs.
- Handles high tensile stress, allowing stretching and pulling.
- Characterized by a high density of fibrous collagen fibers and a low density of ground substance.
Connective Tissue Proper
- Divided into two categories: Loose connective tissue and Dense connective tissue.
Loose Connective Tissue
- Most abundant type, includes areolar connective tissue.
- Located throughout various layers of the body, providing support and cushioning to organs and binding body parts together.
- Functions include suspending the body, transmitting forces, and aiding in movement.
- Contains adipose tissue (fat) and reticular tissue (found in lymph nodes).
Dense Connective Tissue
- Two subcategories include Dense Regular and Dense Irregular connective tissue.
- Dense Regular: Includes tendons (connect muscle to bone) and ligaments (connect bone to bone), characterized by high collagen fiber density for tensile strength.
- Typically avascular, with limited healing capacity reliant on motion for nutrition and waste removal.
- Dense Irregular: Found in the dermis of the skin, providing structural support.
Fluid Connective Tissue
- Blood is identified as a type of fluid connective tissue.
Summary of Types of Connective Tissue
- Connective tissues consist of:
- Fluid Connective Tissue (blood)
- Connective Tissue Proper (loose and dense)
- Supporting Connective Tissue (bone and cartilage)
