Study Notes
Types of Abnormal Red Blood Cells (RBCs)
- Acanthocytes are also called thorny cells or spiculated cells.
- Burr cells are also known as echinocytes.
- Ovalocytes are similar in shape to an oval.
- Elliptocytes are elongated or oval-shaped.
- Dacryocytes are pear-shaped or teardrop-shaped.
- Schistocytes are fragmented RBCs.
- There are RBCs with irregularly spiculated surfaces.
- There are RBCs with regularly spiculated surfaces.
Associated Conditions
- Conditions associated with abnormal RBCs include thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura (TTP) and Hemolytic Uremic Syndrome (HUS)
- These conditions can present with edema, abnormal blood chemistries, and unusual blood cell counts.
Blood Cell Morphology
- DREPANOCYTE (Sickle Cell): Sickle or crescent shaped. Two forms, Irreversible Sickle Cell (ISC)
- Conditions: Sickle cell anemia, Hemoglobin SC disease
- LEPTOCYTE: Codocytes, Platycytes. Greek helmet cell, Mexican hot cell, bull’s eye cell, target cell.
- Conditions: Liver disease, certain hemoglobinopathies, thalassemia, Mediterranean anemia
- BISCUIT CELL: Pronounced projections.
- BRONZE ELLIPTOCYTE: Elliptical-shaped cells.
- SEMILUNAR BODY: Semicircular with a bite mark.
- Conditions: Frequently seen in malaria and other conditions causing overt hemolysis
- BITE CELL: Demonstrates a semicircular edge (like a bite mark).
Blood Conditions and Markers
- Disseminated Intravascular Coagulation (DIC): Defibrination syndrome, generalized over-activation of the coagulation cascade.
- Causes: Tissue trauma, obstetric complications, mucus-secreting tumors, infections (e.g., malaria, certain septicemia), acute promyelocytic leukemia
- Diagnostic Tests: D-dimer test, PF1+2 (Prothrombin Fragment 1 plus 2)
Frequently Seen Blood Cells
- Sickle Cells: Associated with Sickle Cell Anemia.
- Other Cells: Related to specific conditions such as DIC, and other blood-related disorders, including malaria.
