Tuition Reimbursement
- Full-time members in good standing, working for the department for at least one year, can apply for tuition reimbursement.
- Members must be enrolled in a degree-seeking program at an accredited college or university.
- The degree program must be clearly related to the member's position, rank, or career path within the organization.
- The policy is not retroactive and only applies to courses taken after the date of publication.
Course Scheduling
- Members cannot attend courses during work hours unless approved by the Deputy Chief of Training.
- Members must create a schedule that does not interfere with their work schedule.
- Members are limited to 9 hours per standard semester session (spring and fall semesters) and 3 hours per special semester session (summer sessions).
Reimbursement
- The department will reimburse up to $425.00 per instructional hour.
- Reimbursement can be used for tuition, books, and other fees directly associated with the course.
- The reimbursement amount is budget-dependent and can be changed at any time; only twenty members per year can apply.
- There is a limit of $3,825.00 per semester and $10,200.00 annually.
- Reimbursement will not be used for late fees, travel expenses, out-of-district fees, parking fees, financial fees, or any other fee not directly associated with the course.
Restitution
- The department considers tuition reimbursement an investment in the member’s professional development.
- Restitution starts when the department contributes over $7,500.00 toward the training, certification, or professional development of the employee.
- Members must serve the department for a period of 24 months following the activation of a service restitution schedule.
- Members who do not complete the 24-month service restitution schedule will be required to reimburse the department according to the following schedule:
- 0 - 6 months: 100%
- 7 - 12 months: 75%
- 13 - 18 months: 50%
- 19 - 24 months: 25%
- The restitution schedule is extended by 12 months for each $7,500 threshold exceeded.
- Employment with the Spring Fire Department is at-will and can be terminated at any time, with or without notice or cause.
