Study Notes
TRANSLATION PROCEDURES
- Borrowing: Transferring a source language (SL) word directly to the target language (TL) text.
- Common items transferred: names of living people (excluding Pope and a few royals), geographical names, periodical/newspaper names, titles of works (plays, films, literary), private companies/institutions, public/nationalized institutions (unless already translated), and other similar items (street names, addresses).
NATURALIZATION
- Adapts the SL word's pronunciation and morphology (word forms) to conform to the TL's norms.
NEOLOGISM
- Newly created lexical items (words or phrases) or existing ones that take on new meanings.
- Newmark says translators normally shouldn't create neologisms in non-literary texts. However, they are acceptable in literary texts (recreating SL neologisms), popular advertisements (if following the original and impactful), or when a cultural SL item is deemed crucial.
THROUGH-TRANSLATION (CALQUE)
- Literal translation of common phrases, collocations, names of organizations, and even components of compounds/phrases.
- Also known as "loan translation". Newmark prefers "through-translation".
- Examples provided of French-to-English, English-to-Turkish, French-to-Turkish, and English to Turkish.
