A good stage manager is essential for a smooth production, handling emergencies that may arise during the performance
They play a crucial role in structuring lighting, look, and coordination, ensuring the production meets all requirements

Makeup

Makeup enhances normal features, creates characters, and counters artificial illumination
It's essential to handle makeup with care on stage, as youthful faces may not adapt easily to older roles, and heavy makeup can look cheap or tacky
Simple makeup can suggest age and character, while elaborate makeup for fantasy or special effects roles requires careful consideration

Theme and Plot

The theme is the central idea of a production, often expressed through dialogue, bodily movements, gestures, dance, songs, or inferred after watching
The plot is the storyline, what is happening in the play
The actors and actresses bring the characters to life, each with their own personality

Libretto or Script

The story of any play is taken forward by means of the libretto or script
The success of the play depends hugely on how well the librettist or scriptwriter wrote the dialogue, and on the quality of the delivery by the actors or actresses

Sound and Set Design

Natural sounds in a play add authenticity to scenes, allowing the audience to pick up on them as they occur
The set, including sceneries, furniture, and props, is designed and constructed by the set designer and production designer
The stage manager oversees all visual details, including costumes, to ensure the play's style and period align with the director's vision

Director's Role

The director aims to faithfully reproduce the playwright's intentions, discovering the play's values and meanings
They work with actors, choreographers, stage managers, and designers to bring the story to life
The director should be an excellent actor, scenic artist, and stage techie, able to handle technology and human beings with equal skill
