The Trachea
- The trachea is a tubular structure that serves as a passageway for air to enter the lungs, connecting the larynx (voice box) to the bronchi.
- It is located in the anterior (front) part of the neck, extending from the cricoid cartilage (below the larynx) to the carina (the point where the trachea divides into the right and left bronchi).
Trachea Structure
- The trachea is mainly composed of C-shaped rings of cartilage, which provide structural support and maintain the trachea's tubular shape.
- The trachea is lined with a mucous membrane that produces mucus, helping to trap dust, bacteria, and other particles that enter the airway, and is also covered with cilia (small hair-like structures) that aid in the removal of debris.
