Study Notes
The Skull and its Landmarks
- The skull is made up of two sections: Neurocranium and Viscerocranium
- Neurocranium consists of the cranial bones
- Viscerocranium consists of the facial bones
Viscerocranium Function
- Protects the brain
- Houses and protects the senses of smell, sight, and taste
- Provides a frame for the soft tissues of the face
- Facilitates eating, facial expression, breathing, and speech
- The form of the face is largely due to the facial skeleton
Bones of the Viscerocranium
- 14 facial bones: Vomer, Conchae, Nasal bones, Maxilla, Mandible, Palatine bones, Zygomatic bones, Lacrimal bones
- Vomer: A thin, singular bone that runs vertically within the nasal cavity and separates the nasal cavities
- Conchae: Also known as turbinate bones, they increase the amount of inspired air that comes into contact with cavity walls
- Nasal bones: Two slender oblong bones that vary in size and form the bridge of the nose
- Maxilla: Located at the front of the face, forms the upper jaw, sides of the nasal cavity, and sections of the eye socket
- Mandible: Forms the lower part of the jaw, houses lower teeth, and is the largest bone in the human skull
- Zygomatic bones: Form the cheek bones, important contributors to mastication, and provide an attachment point for the masseter muscle
- Lacrimal bones: Smallest bones of the face, form the medial wall of the orbit and provide support for the eyes
- Palatine bones: Situated at the back of the nasal cavity, helps form the nasal cavity, eye socket, and hard palate
Bone Articulations
- Nasal bones: Articulate with the other nasal bone, frontal bone, maxilla, and ethmoid
- Conchae: Articulate with ethmoid, maxilla, lacrimal, and palatine bone
- Vomer: Articulate with the maxilla, ethmoid, sphenoid bones, and palatine
- Lacrimal bones: Articulate with the frontal, ethmoid, maxilla, and inferior nasal concha
- Maxilla: Articulate with the zygomatic, frontal, and palatine
- Zygomatic bones: Articulate with the sphenoid, maxilla, frontal, and temporal bone
- Mandible: Articulate with the temporal bone to form the temporomandibular joint (TMJ)
- Palatine bones: Articulate with the sphenoid, ethmoid, maxilla, inferior nasal concha, vomer, and the opposite palatine
Foramina in the Palatine Bones
- Greater and lesser palatine foramina: Transmit nerves and blood vessels
