- Shabu, marijuana, and inhalants are the three most commonly abused drugs in the Philippines.
- Drug dependence is a cluster of physical, behavioral, and cognitive phenomena that make drug use a high priority, creating a strong desire.
- Drug misuse is inconsistent with prescribed dosage.
- Drug abuse is use for non-medical reasons. This leads to organ damage (brain and liver), addiction, and troubled behaviors.
- Drug tolerance is when the body adapts to a drug, requiring more of the drug for the same effect.
- Domains of life affected by drug use and abuse are community, school, peer relationships, family, and personal domains.
- Gateway drugs, like cigarettes and alcohol, can lead to more dangerous drugs like marijuana and shabu. Teenagers who smoke or drink earlier have more chances to experiment with dangerous drugs.
- Harmful effects of drug use and abuse include organ failure, cancer, heart disease, liver problems, paralysis, accidents, and death.
- Depressant drugs slow down the central nervous system, inducing drowsiness and relaxation. Alcohol, barbiturates, and tranquilizers are depressant drugs. Behavioral problems, heart problems, brain stroke, liver problems, mental disorder, and coma and death are also potential adverse effects from this drug category
- Stimulant drugs speed up the central nervous system, increasing energy and alertness. This leads to extreme paranoia, multiple organ failure, brain damage, and mental disorder/coma and death. Shabu, caffeine, nicotine, and cocaine are stimulants.
- Narcotics relieve pain and induce sleepiness. Examples include cocaine, heroin, and marijuana. Harmful effects can include Hepatitis, tetanus, HIV/AIDS, coma, and death
- Hallucinogens distort reality and senses. Examples include lysergic acid diethylamide, psilocybin, and mescaline. Harmful effects include flashbacks, increased blood pressure, brain damage, mental disorder, coma, and death.
- Inhalants are readily available household chemicals and anesthetics that can lead to nerve damage, brain damage, muscle spasm, bone marrow damage, coma, and death. Acetone, rugby, spray paint, cleaning fluids, and air conditioning fluid are examples.

- Protective factors to prevent drug use and abuse include a loving and caring family, involvement in sports, positive outlook in life, a positive self-image, caring and supportive friends, and a sense of worthiness and achievement.
