Study Notes
Spring Fire Department LMTV Guideline
- Defines guidelines for deploying and using the Light-Medium Transportation Vehicle (LMTV)
- Applies to all Spring Fire Department personnel
- Fire Chief reviews the guideline annually
LMTV Pre-Operational Checks
- The LMTV checklist must be completed anytime the vehicle is used.
- Any discrepancies must be reported to an SFD Emergency Vehicle Technician
- Upon issuance of a "Watch" condition by the National Weather Service (36 hours before inclement weather), the LMTV must be inspected and readied for service
- Upon issuance of a "Warning" condition by the National Weather Service (24 hours before inclement weather), personnel should review the operational video at https://youtu.be/vAnTNxMtDIQ.
LMTV Deployment
- The Pre-Deployment Checklist must be completed before deployment
- The SFD Emergency Vehicle Technician or designee will deliver the LMTV to the affected area's station
LMTV Operation
- The on-duty District Chief must respond during any emergency deployment
- All SFD personnel must be seated with their seatbelts fastened while the LMTV is in use.
- The SFD attendant in the rear of the vehicle should be seated and have all passengers as close to the front of the bed as possible.
- Approved operators must have attended the LMTV lecture/training and driving/operations courses
- Only approved operators can drive the LMTV
- The second and third crew members should familiarize themselves with operations, but are not required to be approved operators
- Whenever the LMTV is in water deeper than 6 inches, all personnel must wear a SFD supplied PFD, SFD provided rescue helmet, and class "C" uniform or a wetsuit.
LMTV Usage
- The LMTV must be operated safely and professionally.
- The preferred mode of travel is on improved roads at a speed that minimizes wake.
- HWY mode (55 psi tire pressure and 55 mph speed) should be used on improved roads.
- For unimproved roads, the CTIS has additional modes:
- Cross-Country (33 psi and 40 mph for mixed terrain)
- Sand (20 psi and 12 mph for soft terrain)
- The LED in the corner of the selected CTIS mode must be fully illuminated, not flashing, to ensure the mode is activated.
- HWY mode should be selected after using another mode during an incident.
LMTV Driving Modes and Restrictions
- Highway: 55 mph, no time restriction, 55 psi
- Cross-Country: 40 mph, no time restriction, 33 psi
- Sand: 12 mph, no time restriction, 20 psi
- Emergency: 5 mph, 10-minute time restriction, 14 psi
CTIS Over Speed
- An amber warning light in the middle of the dashboard indicates CTIS Over Speed, which occurs if vehicle speed exceeds the selected driving mode's speed.
- To avoid damage, either drive at the correct speed or select a different driving mode.
LMTV Service Lights
- Located in an oval switch panel on the lower right side of the instrument panel
- Should be used when deploying the rescue ramp
- Should be used to illuminate the bed area when individuals occupy the bed.
Water Operations
- The LMTV is not to be used in water deeper than 30 inches.
- The radiator fan should be turned off before entering water and re-engaged after exiting or when the water level falls below 10 inches.
LMTV Additional Information
- The LMTV is primarily for rescuing people, not belongings.
- After use, wash the vehicle, rinse the undercarriage, clear any debris, and contact an SFD Emergency Vehicle Technician to initiate proper PM procedures if the vehicle was used in water.
