    Study Notes

    Sewage Disposal System: Septic Tank

    • Septic tank is a container that receives and partially treats sewage.
    • Sludge is the heavier organic matter that settles at the bottom of the tank.
    • Scum is the lighter organic matter that floats on the surface of the septic tank.
    • Effluent is the liquid sewage found between the scum and sludge.
    • Anaerobic bacteria inside the septic tank decompose organic waste in the absence of oxygen.
    • Aerobic bacteria inside the septic tank decompose organic waste with the presence of oxygen.
    • Septic tank design criteria dictates minimum dimensions, partition structure, capacity, location, second compartment, inlet/outlet pipe size, inlet/outlet pipe length and location, and air space.
    • Minimum dimensions according to the Revised National Plumbing Code of the Philippines: length 1500mm, width 900mm, depth 1200mm.
    • Partition is fitted at the inlet compartment with a minimum inside diameter of 104.6mm
    • Structure must be able to handle 14.4kPa of earth pressure.
    • Capacity depends on the number of bedrooms, apartment units, estimated sewage flow rate, or the number of plumbing fixtures, whichever is greater.
    • Location of the septic tank:
      • Not underneath the house
      • Minimum 1.5 meters from the building
      • Minimum 1.5 meters from the property line
      • Minimum 15.2 meters away from water wells or streams.
    • Second compartment maximum total capacity of the tank is one-third; minimum 1 m3.
    • Inlet/outlet pipe size must be no less than the sewer pipe diameter.
    • Inlet/outlet pipe length must extend 101.6mm above the water surface and at least 304.8mm below it.
    • Inlet/outlet pipe location inlet pipe invert level is at least 50.8mm above the outlet pipe invert.
    • Air Space requires side walls extending 228.6mm above liquid depth, and tank cover extending at least 50.8mm above back vent openings.
