Study Notes
Septic Tank Construction
- The most common material for septic tank construction is plastered concrete hollow blocks or reinforced concrete.
- Septic tanks are generally rectangular to slow down waste flow and avoid disruption of the decomposition processes.
- The minimum dimensions of a septic tank are 90 centimeters wide by 150 centimeters long.
- A depth of at least 120 centimeters is needed for effective decomposition of organic material in the tank.
- The depth of the tank should not exceed the natural groundwater table.
- The inlet and outlet pipes of the septic tank are installed at least 120 centimeters from the bottom and are equally spaced from both sides.
- The inlet and outlet pipes extend down into the liquid in the tank no more than 30 centimeters.
- The bottom of the tank should be sloped towards a single low point for collecting settled organic materials.
- A manhole should be provided to allow for cleaning, inspection, and repair.
- Larger septic tanks may have suspended compartments attached to the ceiling with baffle plates designed to separate the tank into compartments.
House Drain Classifications
-
House drains are classified into four types:
- Combined Drain
- Sanitary Drain
- Storm Drain
- Industrial Drain
-
Most building codes prohibit the use of combined drains.
-
Sanitary drains are the most common and only allow sanitary and domestic waste.
-
Storm water is not allowed in a sanitary drain.
House Drain Sizing and Sloping
- The size of the house drain pipe must be sufficient to ensure scouring action with a flow velocity of about 50% of the pipe diameter.
- The recommended slope for a house drain is 2%.
Floor Drain Installation
- Floor drains are typically installed in basements, near heating equipment, under kitchen sinks, and in laundry areas.
- The minimum recommended size for a P-trap on a floor drain is 75 millimeters (3 inches).
- The P-trap should be installed no more than 20 centimeters below the floor line.
- The P-trap should be a deep seal type.
- Experienced plumbers recommend a minimum of 75 millimeters diameter for floor drain P-traps.
Water and Water Supply for Firefighting
- Water is the most common and effective medium for fire suppression, as it cools, smothers, emulsifies, and dilutes combustible materials.
- Water is supplied to high-rise buildings through either elevated water tanks or underground reservoirs.
Elevated Water Tanks
- Elevated water tanks are traditionally used to provide a constant pressure supply of water in distribution lines, store sufficient water to meet demand, prevent excessive pumping, and provide a fire reserve.
- Disadvantages of elevated water tanks include unsightliness, high construction costs, and the need for a massive structure and foundation.
