Study Notes
Occupational Health and Environmental Control
- Rule 1070 establishes threshold limit values for toxic and carcinogenic substances and physical agents in the work environment.
- Threshold limit values represent the airborne concentration of substances that nearly all workers can be exposed to daily without adverse effects.
Threshold Limit Values for Airborne Contaminants
- Threshold limit values refer to time-weighted concentrations for an 8-hour workday and a total of 48 hours of work exposure per week.
- Exposure limits for materials with names preceded by "C" (e.g. Boron triflouride) shall not exceed the ceiling value given in the Table.
Exposure Guidelines
- Exposure to materials not preceded by "C" and materials in Table 8a shall not exceed the 8-hour time-weighted average limit.
- Short-period excursions in TLV values may be allowed, but with specific multipliers:
- from 0 to I concentration by 3 times
- from I to I 0 concentration by 2 times
- from over 10 to 100 concentration by 1 ½ times
- from over 100 to 1000 concentration by 1 ¼ times
Skin Notation
- Substances with "Skin" notation (e.g. DDT-Skin) indicate potential cutaneous absorption and require measures to prevent skin absorption.
Compliance Measures
- Administrative or engineering controls should be implemented to achieve compliance with Rule 1072.
- When controls are not feasible, protective equipment or other measures shall be used to keep employee exposure within the prescribed limits.
