Study Notes
Respiration
- Respiration has three main functions: ventilation, gas exchange, and oxygen utilization.
- Ventilation is the process of breathing.
- Gas exchange occurs between the air and capillaries in the lungs, and between systemic capillaries and tissues of the body.
- Oxygen utilization refers to cellular respiration.
Alveoli
- Alveoli are polyhedral in shape and clustered like honeycomb units.
- There are approximately 300 million alveoli in the lungs.
- They have a large surface area of 60-80 square meters.
- Each alveolus is only one cell layer thick.
- The total air barrier between the alveoli and the blood is only 2 cells thick (2 micrometers).
Alveolar Cell Types
- There are two types of cells in the alveoli: alveolar type I and alveolar type II.
- Alveolar type I cells are structural cells that provide the main structure of the alveolus.
- Alveolar type II cells secrete surfactant, a substance that helps to reduce surface tension in the alveoli and prevent them from collapsing.
Respiratory Zone
- The respiratory zone is the region of the lungs where gas exchange occurs between air and blood.
- It includes the respiratory bronchioles and alveolar sacs.
- The respiratory zone must contain alveoli.
- The conducting zone is comprised of the trachea and primary bronchi.
- The respiratory zone consists of respiratory bronchioles, alveolar sacs, terminal bronchioles, and alveoli.
- There are approximately 100,000 respiratory bronchioles, 8 million alveolar sacs, and 60,000 terminal bronchioles in the lungs.
