Reproductive System Overview
- The reproductive system's purpose is to create offspring. Gametes (sperm and egg) are formed through gametogenesis in the gonads (testes in males, ovaries in females).
- Human cells typically have 46 chromosomes (diploid). Gametes are haploid, containing 23 chromosomes, produced by meiosis.
- Male gametogenesis is spermatogenesis, occurring in the testes, producing millions of sperm.
- Female gametogenesis is oogenesis, occurring in the ovaries, producing one egg per cycle.
Male Reproductive System
- Spermatogenesis occurs in the testes, producing millions of sperm.
Female Reproductive System
- The female reproductive system's functions include producing and releasing egg cells, facilitating fertilization, supporting pregnancy and childbirth, and providing nourishment (milk).
- Ovaries: These contain follicles that develop and release eggs during ovulation. They have an inner medulla (blood vessels/nerves) and an outer cortex (containing follicles).
- Fallopian Tubes: These have an infundibulum (nearest the ovary, with fimbriae that guide the egg), an ampulla (site of fertilization), and an isthmus that connects to the uterus.
- Uterus: The uterus has three layers: perimetrium (outer), myometrium (muscle for contractions during labor), and endometrium (inner lining for implantation and placenta formation).
- Vagina: An elastic, muscular canal connecting the external genitals to the uterus; it's also a birth canal and site of sperm deposition.
- Mammary Glands: These specialized glands in the breast synthesize and secrete milk under hormonal influence.
- Oogenesis: This occurs in the ovaries, beginning before birth and resuming at puberty, producing one mature egg and polar bodies per cycle.
Hormonal Regulation
- Reproductive organs and processes are tightly regulated by hormones (e.g., testosterone, estrogen, and progesterone) for proper function and reproduction.
