Reemployment of Sworn Employees
- Applicants seeking reemployment as full-time sworn Omaha Police Department (OPD) employees must be approved by the City of Omaha Personnel Board (per OMC 23-302)
- Applicants seeking part-time roles require Chief of Police approval and adherence to prerequisites, training, and other Department requirements.
- Former OPD employees requesting reemployment must request from the HR Department.
- The process includes background checks, psychological/psychiatric evaluation, and potential waiver attestation from Internal Affairs.
- Rehired employees are subject to the benefits and limitations outlined in the Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) between the City of Omaha and the Omaha Police Officers Association (OPOA).
- Some employees (members of the City of Omaha Police and Fire Retirement System) may need to repay contributions and/or interest.
- Reemployment does not restrict an employee from applying for other positions within the department in the same manner as any public member.
- Rehired employees subject to retraining based on standards set by the Nebraska Law Enforcement Training Center (NLETC).
- The Chief of Police can waive retraining requirements if the individual worked in a comparable law enforcement agency for 4 years after leaving the OPD.
Part-Time Sworn Employee Reemployment
- Retired/resigned OPD sworn employees may be rehired part-time if positions are available
- The former employee's Nebraska Law Enforcement Certification needs to be valid and in good standing.
- Rehires need approval from the Chief of Police.
Retraining of Reemployed Employees
- The Nebraska Law Enforcement Training Center (NLETC) defines retraining standards for reinstated/rehired employees
- Retraining may include classroom and/or field training with an OPD Field Training Officer.
- The Chief of Police decides on specific retraining requirements based on individual case circumstances.
- Waiver of retraining is possible if the employee was employed in a comparable law enforcement agency for at least 4 years following leaving the OPD.
