Professional Organizations in Malaysia
- The Malaysian Pharmacists Society (MPS) is a national association for pharmacists in Malaysia.
- It was formerly known as the Malaysian Pharmaceutical Society.
- The motto of the MPS is "Service towards a healthy society" ("Berkhidmat untuk kesihatan rakyat").
- The MPS represents pharmacists' interests and the public's interest.
- Representatives from the MPS serve on the Pharmacy Board and Poisons Board of the Ministry of Health.
- The MPS has five categories of membership:
- Ordinary membership (all registered pharmacists, with life-time option)
- Associate membership (pharmacists/lecturers at recognized higher learning institutions, not for registered pharmacists)
- Provisionally registered pharmacist (PRP) membership (graduates preparing for registration)
- UG (Undergraduate) student members, under MyPSA (Malaysian Pharmacist Student Association)
- PG (Postgraduate) pharmacist membership
History of MPS
- In the early 1900s, two pharmaceutical associations existed focusing on pharmacist interests:
- Penang Pharmaceutical Association (based in Penang)
- Straits Pharmaceutical Association (based in Singapore, including the southern part of the then Federation of Malaya, especially Johor)
- In May 1949, the Straits Pharmaceutical Association became the Malayan Pharmaceutical Association with two divisions:
- Southern Division (Singapore, primarily from the Colony of Singapore)
- Northern Division (incorporating Penang Association, from the Federation)
- The number of pharmacists was low, around 30 in 1955.
- The MPS played a role in drafting various Ordinances related to pharmacists and pharmacy practice (e.g., Poison Ordinance, Pharmacists Registration Ordinance).
- The annual subscription fee was 12 Malayan Dollars annually.
- The current MPS was established on November 6th, 1967 after the separation of Malaysia and Singapore.
MPS - Roles and Functions
- The MPS is the only organization representing all pharmacists (private and public sectors).
- It plays a role in various forums and protects pharmacist interests.
- Dispensing separation, Health care financing, Poisons Board, a member of Balai Ikhtisas Malaysia (Malaysian Professional Centre), Pharmacy Board, and Recognition of Pharmacy degrees are amongst some of its roles and responsibilities.
Aims of MPS
- Promote and maintain the honour and interest of the pharmacy profession.
- Encourage and further the development of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Education.
- Improve the Science of Pharmacy for the general welfare of public by fostering scientific and professional information relating to the practice of pharmacy.
- Uphold and enhance the standard and ethics of the profession.
- Affiliate and co-operate with organizations for the Society's aims.
- Represent member views on matters affecting the common interest.
- Assist in improving healthcare services.
- Enhance the Code of Conduct for Pharmacists.

MPS Council
- Elected by members during the Annual General Meeting.
- Hold office for two years.

Malaysian Academy of Pharmacy (MAP)
- Formed in January 2004.
- Has a council and a principal.
- Akademik (academic) matters – CPD, professional courses.
- Mission:
- Continuing professional development (CPD) opportunities for pharmacists
- Platform for knowledge sharing among educators, researchers, practitioners, and policy makers.
- Advocate and facilitate specialist and advanced level practitioner provisions, accreditations, and credentialing.
- Promote innovations in pharmacy practice, research, and education.
MAP Aims and Objectives
- Advance the Art and Science of Pharmacy.
- Promote study and research into pharmacy and scientific problems.
- Promote and maintain the highest standards of professional practice.
- Maintain a high code of ethical conduct amongst members.
- Represent, express and give effect to members’ views and opinions.
- Protect the interests and dignity of the Malaysian Academy of Pharmacy.

Malaysian Community Pharmacists Association (MCPG)
- Legally established in October 2005.
- Became the Malaysian Community Pharmacy Guild in April 2013.
- Represents community pharmacists and pharmacies.
- Focuses on pharmacy professionalism and practitioners' interests.
- One-third of the total registered and qualified pharmacists in Malaysia (as of May 2013).
Main Objectives of MCPG
- Promote and protect the honour and interests of the pharmacy profession in industrial matters.
- Enhance and uphold professional standards and ethics of community pharmacy practice.
- Protect and improve the interests of community pharmacists, including exclusive dispensing of medicines.
- Encourage and spearhead pharmaceutical education and sciences; publish relevant information.
- Represent members' views before the general public and relevant authorities.
- Affiliate and co-operate with organizations.
- Assist the country in better pharmacy care via quality pharmaceutical products and medication management.
- Monitor appropriate distribution and growth of community pharmacies with relevant authorities.
- Strengthens bona fide management of community pharmacies.
- Improve management control of community pharmacies.
