    Study Notes

    Respiratory System Overview

    • Breathing is essential for life, representing dramatic moments of human experience
    • Respiration is driven by metabolism's need for ATP
    • ATP production requires oxygen & produces carbon dioxide. Therefore, breathing is crucial for both provision of oxygen and elimination of carbon dioxide.
    • The respiratory system's primary function is to provide oxygen to the blood and remove carbon dioxide.

    Respiratory System Functions

    • Gas exchange (oxygen & carbon dioxide)
    • Communication (speech & voice)
    • Olfaction (smell)
    • Acid-base balance
    • Blood pressure regulation
    • Expulsion of abdominal contents (coughing)

    Respiratory System Components

    • Upper Respiratory Tract:
      • Nose (filters, warms, humidifies air; detects odors)
      • Pharynx (throat): passageway for air, food, & liquid;
      • Larynx (voice box): produces sound;
    • Lower Respiratory Tract:
      • Trachea (windpipe): main airway
      • Bronchi: branching airways (right & left)
      • Bronchioles: smaller airways
      • Alveoli: tiny air sacs where gas exchange occurs
      • Lungs (major organs for gas exchange)

    Lungs (Pulmones)

    • Three faces: diaphragmatic, costal, and mediastinal
    • Structures entering and exiting the lung at hilar region called radix (root) pulmonis
    • Contain alveoli
    • Supported by structures like the cartilages

    Root of the Lung

    • The lung root contains: blood vessels, bronchi, nerves, and lymphatics
    • The root of the lung is essential for oxygen and carbon dioxide exchange, as well as regulating the environment on the inside of the lung to enable ideal gas exchange, preventing friction of respiratory organs.

    Pleura

    • Two-layered serous membrane; visceral pleura surrounds the lungs; parietal pleura lines the thoracic cavity
    • Contains a serous fluid that prevents friction between the pleura membranes
    • Encloses the lungs
    • Potential space between these layers that minimizes friction

    Trachea & Bronchi

    • The trachea is a tube anterior to the esophagus, supported by hyaline cartilage rings.
    • The trachea branches into two primary bronchi: right and left
    • Each lung has the bronchus, lymphatic vessels and nerves
    • These further divide into secondary/lobar & tertiary/segmental bronchi and bronchioles.
