    Study Notes

SIR Reporting for Exposure Fire Incidents

    • An exposure fire report is required when a fire spreads beyond a structure, vehicle, or outdoor property to another property.
    • For OFM Standard Incident reporting, townhomes and single dwelling semi-detached houses are defined as separate structures.
    • The total number of exposures should be reported in the "Total Exposures" field.

    What Constitutes an Exposure Fire

    • A fire in a building, structure, or vehicle that occurs as a direct consequence of another fire that originated in another building, structure, vehicle, or outside open area.
    • Semidetached and attached residential structures are to be reported as separate structures.

    Exceptions

    • Vehicle Fire within a Structure: a vehicle fire occurring within a building is considered a structural fire, and the vehicle is classified as the object or material to first ignite.
    • Multi-Vehicle Fires: a single incident report is required, using the codes for multi-vehicles in the property class to indicate more than one vehicle had fire involvement.

    Completing the Incident Report

    • Separate reports are required for the originating fire and each exposure fire.
    • The Fire Department Incident # will be unique for each report, but the codes for location, fire department, incident date, initial call, and dispatch time of each related exposure fire must be identical to that of the originating fire.

    SIR Fields

    • "Total Exposures": the total number of exposure fires that resulted from an originating fire incident, excluding the initial fire incident.
    • "Exposure Number": the actual number of the exposure report itself, starting at 1.

    SIR Codes for Exposure Fires

    • Ignition Source/Igniting Equipment: use codes 101 to 108 (exposure properties), e.g. 101 detached structure, 102 attached structure, 103 storage container, etc.
    • Fuel or Energy Associated with Igniting Equipment: 96 (exposure fire)
    • Possible Cause: 80 (exposure fire)

    Examples of Exposure Fires

    • A building fire ignites a vehicle parked nearby, the vehicle fire is an exposure fire with an ignition source of 101 detached structure.
    • A building fire ignites a fire in a neighbouring structure, the second structure ignited is an exposure fire with an ignition source of 101 detached structure.
    • A vehicle collision results in a fire that ignites a nearby building, the building fire is an exposure fire with an ignition source of 107 vehicle.

    Not Exposures

    • A fire in a garage attached to a residence spreads to the residence, not an exposure fire.
    • A fire in a vehicle parked within a structure spreads to the structure, not an exposure fire.
    • A fire in a restaurant situated in a mall spreads to a nearby store, not an exposure fire.
    • A fire in a multi-unit dwelling spreads to another unit, not an exposure fire.
