Reporting
- Employees operating a BSO vehicle must immediately report any traffic crash, traffic incident, property damage, or non-contact incident to:
- Local law enforcement agency for immediate response
- Local fire rescue agency, if applicable, for immediate response
- BSO Communications to notify the closest on-duty road patrol supervisor
- The employee's supervisor or an on-duty supervisor in the employee's command
Traffic Crash Investigations
- All BSO traffic crash investigations involving BSO vehicles require the completion of a Florida Crash Report Long Form
- Assignment of investigation:
- Within Broward County: BSO road patrol responsible for conducting investigations in their district
- Non-BSO jurisdiction: The closest BSO district responsible for conducting investigations
- Other agency-involved crashes: On-scene BSO supervisor requests a third-party agency with jurisdiction to conduct the investigation
Initial Administrative Evaluation
- Conducted by the supervisor with available information, including:
- Speaking with the investigator, involved parties, and witnesses
- Ensuring the scene and all involved vehicles are photographed and submitted to evidence.com
- Reviewing reports or evidence pertaining to the damage
- Coordinating with other agencies to obtain investigative documents, photographs, and evidence
- Creating a Vehicle Crash / Property Damage entry in BlueTeam
Inspection and Repair
- All BSO vehicles involved in a traffic crash or property damage incident must be brought in for inspection to a BSO Service Center within seven business days of the incident, if possible
- Leased vehicles will be inspected at the leasing company in accordance with the approved leasing agreement
- If an employee is unable to bring the vehicle in within seven business days, the employee's immediate supervisor will ensure the vehicle is brought in for inspection
Supervisor's Responsibility
- Conduct an administrative evaluation of a traffic crash or property damage incident involving a BSO vehicle
- Ensure a deputy or the appropriate law enforcement agency has been notified and is responding
- Ensure the appropriate fire rescue agency has been notified and is responding, if applicable
- Secure the employee's personal effects and BSO property, when necessary
- Notify Traffic Homicide, Internal Affairs, and Risk Management if the traffic crash involves a fatality, potential fatality, or serious bodily injury
