Study Notes
Nervous System
- The nervous system is composed of the central nervous system (CNS) and the peripheral nervous system (PNS).
- The CNS is responsible for directing and controlling body functions.
Central Nervous System (CNS)
- Encompasses the brain and spinal cord.
- Brain: Protected by the skull.
- Includes the cerebrum, cerebellum, medulla oblongata, hypothalamus, thalamus, and limbic system.
- Spinal cord: Protected by the vertebral column.
Peripheral Nervous System (PNS)
- Allows communication between the external and internal environments and the CNS.
- Composed of nerves and ganglia.
Cell Types
- Neurons: Generate and transmit impulses.
- Glia: Non-excitable cells supporting and protecting neurons.
- Include astrocytes, satellite cells, ependymal cells, oligodendrocytes, Schwann cells, microglia.
Divisions of the Peripheral Nervous System
- Somatic nervous system: Responsible for voluntary responses.
- Autonomic nervous system: Responsible for involuntary responses.
- Sympathetic nervous system: Triggers responses to stressful situations.
- Parasympathetic nervous system: Regulates the body during relaxation and digestion.

Description
This quiz covers the structure and function of the nervous system, including the central and peripheral nervous systems. You'll explore the roles of neurons and glia, as well as the divisions of the peripheral nervous system. Test your understanding of how these components communicate and direct body functions.
