- Insertion: Iliotibial tract and gluteal tuberosity of femur; lateral surface of greater trochanter of femur; anterior surface of greater trochanter of femur; upper border of greater trochanter of femur; quadrate tubercle of femur
- Nerve Supply: Inferior gluteal nerve; superior gluteal nerve; first and second sacral nerves; sacral plexus
- Action: Extends and laterally rotates hip joint; extends knee joint through iliotibial tract; abducts thigh at hip joint; tilts pelvis during walking to clear opposite leg; assists gluteus maximus in extending knee; lateral rotator of thigh at hip joint
Muscles of the Anterior Fascial Compartment of the Thigh
- Origin: Anterosuperior iliac spine; iliac fossa of hip bone; transverse processes, bodies, and intervertebral discs of T12 and L5 vertebrae; superior ramus of pubis; anteroinferior iliac spine; ilium above acetabulum; upper end and shaft of femur; anterior and lateral surfaces of shaft of femur
- Insertion: Upper medial surface of tibia; lesser trochanter of femur (with psoas); lesser trochanter of femur (with iliacus); linea aspera of femur; quadriceps tendon; patella; tibial tubercle (via ligamentum patellae)
- Nerve Supply: Femoral nerve; lumbar plexus; femoral nerve (sometimes obturator nerve)
