Types of Media

• Print Media: paper and ink are reproduced traditionally and mechanically.
• Broadcast Media: One type reaches target audiences via airwaves as a transmission medium.
• Media Convergence: Merges equipment and tools to produce/distribute news through digitization and computer networks.

Print Media

• Text Media: A simple and flexible format to convey ideas, whether handwritten or printed.

• Typography: The art of arranging the visual component of the written word

• Visual Media : Pictures, photos, images, and graphics are used to channel by sight

• Graphic design: Information is organized and presented visually through creative processes for a specific purpose.

• Informational Graphics (Infographics): Visually represents information for easy understanding of high-volume, complex data, e.g., graphs and charts.

• Cartoons: Sketches/drawings that are satirical and humorous, like comic strips or editorial cartoons.

• Photography: Images created when light is captured on a light-sensitive surface, usually photographic film.

Broadcast Media

• Audio Media: Broadcast which employs audio or voice recordings as a delivery medium
• Multimedia: Computer-controlled integration of text, graphics, drawings, still and moving images (video), animation, audio, and any other media.
• Hypermedia: Photos or graphics link to other sources of information; extends multimedia.
• New Media: Integrates different technologies on one digital platform. Content is organized and distributed.
• Examples: podcasts, augmented reality, video games, blogs, and wikis.
• Information disseminated to theoretically infinite receivers.
• Offers customized experiences based on specified categories.

Media Convergence

• Also known as technological convergence.

• Represents the synergy of communication, computing, and content in the digital world.

• Picture Perfect Instructions:

• Each group needs an illustration board for writing.

• Guess the media type shown in the pictures.

• A is for Print, B is for Broadcast, and C is for New Media.

• Given 30 seconds to answer and then raise the board.

• DO NOT lower the board without permission

• Points awarded for correct answers.

• News Analysis Activity:

• Research a specific issue across media that covers print, broadcast and new media.

• Compare and contrast information across media.

• Two group members will present to the class.
