Study Notes
Unit 6: Transformations
-
Day 1: Symmetry and Introduction to Transformations
- Symmetry is like a mirror image.
- An image that looks identical after being turned or flipped is symmetrical.
- Two main types of symmetry:
- Reflectional symmetry: object mirrored across a line of reflection. Can have multiple lines.
- Rotational symmetry: shape looks the same after rotating. Includes a degree of rotation (how many degrees the shape must turn).
Unit 6: Transformations
-
Day 2: Translation, Reflection, Rotation, and Dilation
- Warm-up: Determine rotational and reflectional symmetry of vowels
- Translation: Sliding an object across a plane in a given direction and distance. Shape and orientation remain the same.
- Reflection: Reflecting an object across a line of reflection. Each point of the image is the same distance from the line as the original. Shape remains the same, orientation changes.
- Rotation: Turning an object around a rotation point by a certain number of degrees. Shapes stays the same, orientation changes.
- Dilation: Changing the size of the object, making it larger (growth) or smaller (shrink). Images and pre-images are similar; the scale factor from a given point is important.
Unit 6: Transformations

Day 3: Group Activity & Catch-up
- Warm-up: Identify transformations used and order.
- Includes group activities and review of previous days' topics.
