Study Notes
Male Reproductive Physiology - Lecture 1
- The male reproductive system consists of the gonads (testes) and accessory glands/ducts
- These organs include the testes, epididymis, vas deferens, ejaculatory duct, urethra, penis, and scrotum
- The vas deferens is a thick, muscular tube bundled with connective tissue, blood vessels, and nerves within the spermatic cord
- Accessory sex glands (seminal vesicles, prostate, bulbourethral glands) produce seminal plasma
- The main function of the gonads is spermatogenesis and sex hormone production
- Ducts are responsible for sperm storage and transport, and semen/urine transport
- Epididymis aids in sperm maturation and motility acquisition
- Accessory sex glands produce seminal plasma components (e.g., fructose, citric acid, calcium, prostaglandins, and fibrinogen)
- The penis is the male organ of copulation
Male Reproductive Physiology - Structure of Testes
- Testes are paired oval structures (4-5 cm long) located within the scrotum
- The scrotum regulates temperature (2-4°C below core body temp)
- They are covered by the tunica vaginalis (outer serous membrane) and the tunica albuginea (dense connective tissue)
- The tunica albuginea divides the testes into lobules (300-400), containing seminiferous tubules
- Seminiferous tubules are coiled and average over half a meter long
- Spermatogenesis occurs within the seminiferous tubules
Spermatogenesis
- Primordial germ cells migrate to the testes during embryonic development
- Spermatogonia are immature germ cells
- Spermatogenesis occurs in the seminiferous tubules throughout the active sexual life cycle
- It's stimulated by gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH), follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH), and luteinizing hormone (LH)
- Spermatogonia undergo mitotic division at puberty
- One cell remains a spermatogonium, while the other becomes a primary spermatocyte
- Primary spermatocytes undergo meiotic division (Meiosis I and II) to produce spermatids
- Spermatids mature into spermatozoa within the Sertoli cells
- Sertoli cells provide nutrients and support for sperm maturation
- Sertoli cells secrete ABP (androgen-binding protein), inhibin, and AMH (anti-Müllerian hormone)
Structure of Sperm
- A sperm has a head, midpiece, and tail
- The head contains the nucleus and acrosome (containing enzymes for fertilization)
- The midpiece contains mitochondria for ATP production (energy for movement)
- The tail (flagellum) allows for movement
- Approximately 100-300 million sperm are produced daily
- Sperm develop in 64-72 days
Contraception
- Contraceptive methods prevent pregnancy
- Methods including hormonal, barrier, and sterilization
- Methods impact the menstrual cycle, passageways, or implantation
