26 Questions

What is the primary focus of sentence parsing?

Syntactic/structural analysis of sentences

What is the difference between temporarily ambiguous and globally ambiguous sentences?

Temporarily ambiguous sentences have ambiguity resolved later, while globally ambiguous sentences have ambiguity that persists even after reading the entire sentence

Why do researchers study ambiguity in sentence processing?

To understand what information is used when grammar doesn't lead to a specific analysis

What is the primary goal of the garden path theory of sentence comprehension?

To explain parsing regarding both ambiguous and unambiguous sentences

What is the characteristic of a garden path sentence?

It initially leads to one analysis, which turns out to be wrong

What is the relationship between sentence parsing and sentence comprehension?

Sentence parsing is a subset of sentence comprehension

What is the primary difference between sentence processing and sentence comprehension?

Sentence processing includes both comprehension and production, while sentence comprehension only includes comprehension

What is the principle of minimal attachment in the garden path theory?

The parser favors the simplest analysis

What type of models do constraint-based models include?

Interactive, parallel, and competition models

What is a characteristic of interactive models?

They suggest all sources of information are used immediately and interact with each other

Which model suggests that comprehenders use all information immediately, including types other than structural?

Constraint-based models

What did Trueswell et al.'s (1994) eye-tracking study measure?

Reading times with eye tracking

What was the main finding of Trueswell et al.'s (1994) study?

Constraint-based models were supported

What was the critique of Clifton et al. (2003) regarding Trueswell et al.'s (1994) study?

The study's results were due to a null effect

What was the result of Clifton et al.'s (2003) repeat of Trueswell et al.'s (1994) study?

The results opposed Trueswell et al.'s (1994) findings

What is a characteristic of competition models?

They suggest difficulty in comprehension occurs when two or more analyses are equally activated

What is the primary assumption of the principle of minimal attachment?

That the ambiguous phrase should be attached to the structure using the fewest possible additional nodes

What did Rayner et al.'s (1983) study find about the principle of minimal attachment?

That participants focused more on the second half of the sentence and reading time was longer in the noun phrase condition

What is the primary assumption of the principle of late closure?

That the parser attaches the incoming phrase to the phrase currently being processed, which makes it as low in the tree structure as possible

What did Traxler et al.'s (1998) study find about the principle of late closure?

That participants showed higher reading times for the last phrase in the high attachment condition

What is a characteristic of the garden path model?

It is a modular and serial model

What is the main difference between the garden path model and constraint-based models?

The garden path model is a modular model, while constraint-based models are non-modular models

What is the primary function of the parser in the garden path model?

To analyze the syntactic structure of the sentence

What is a characteristic of a modular model?

It processes syntax separately from other types of information

What is a characteristic of a serial model?

It only considers one analysis at a time

What is a characteristic of a reanalysis model?

It accounts for reanalysis when the initial analysis conflicts with later information

Study Notes

Sentence Comprehension

  • Sentence comprehension refers to the syntactic/structural analysis and interpretation of sentences.
  • Sentence parsing focuses on syntactic/structural analysis within sentence comprehension.
  • Sentence processing is a broader term that includes both sentence comprehension and sentence production.

Ambiguity in Sentence Processing

  • There are two types of ambiguous sentences:
    • Temporarily ambiguous sentences: ambiguity occurs at some point in the sentence but is resolved later by syntactic or semantic/pragmatic constraints.
    • Globally ambiguous sentences: even after reading the whole sentence, there are multiple ways to analyze the structure, or the syntactic ambiguity is not resolved.
  • Studying ambiguity in sentence processing helps us understand what information is used when grammar doesn't lead to a specific analysis.

Garden Path Model

  • The garden path model attempts to explain parsing (syntactic analysis) of both ambiguous and unambiguous sentences.
  • The model assumes incremental processing, where words are immediately incorporated into previous structures from left to right.
  • The model follows two principles:
    • Minimal attachment: attach the ambiguous phrase to the structure using the fewest possible additional nodes.
    • Late closure: attach the incoming phrase to the phrase currently being processed, making it as low in the tree structure as possible.

Experimental Evidence for Minimal Attachment

  • Rayner et al. (1983) used eye tracking to measure participants' reading times and focus on ambiguous sentences.
  • The study supported the minimal attachment principle, as participants focused more on the second half of the sentence and reading time was longer in the noun phrase condition.

Late Closure

  • Late closure is used when minimal attachment does not resolve ambiguity.
  • It involves attaching the incoming phrase to the phrase currently being processed, making it as low in the tree structure as possible.
  • Traxler et al. (1998) used eye tracking to measure participants' reading times on high and low attachment sentences.
  • The study supported the late closure principle, as participants showed higher reading times for the last phrase in the high attachment condition.

Garden Path Model Assumptions

  • The garden path model assumes:
    • Syntactic information is used first.
    • The model is modular (initial syntactic processing is not influenced by non-syntactic information).
    • The model is serial (only a single analysis is adopted at a time).
    • The model is a reanalysis model (difficulty occurs when the initial analysis conflicts with later information).

Constraint-Based Models

  • Constraint-based models claim that syntactic processing is not modular and non-structural information is used immediately.
  • They are interactive models, parallel models, and competition models.
  • The three properties of constraint-based models are:
    • Interactive models: all sources of information are used immediately and interact with each other.
    • Parallel models: all analyses of ambiguous structure are activated in parallel.
    • Competition models: difficulty occurs when two or more analyses are equally activated by different sources of information.

Trueswell et al. (1994) Study

  • The study used eye tracking to measure reading times on sentences with animacy and ambiguity.
  • The results supported constraint-based models, as reading times were highest in the animate-ambiguous condition and lowest in any inanimate condition.

Critique and Repeat of Trueswell et al. (1994) Study

  • Clifton et al. (2003) suggested that the original study's results were a null effect and could not be interpreted.
  • Clifton et al. (2003) repeated the study and found that reading times were different in the two inanimate conditions, supporting the garden path model.
