Pseudopodia

Which organisms are included in the Kingdom Monera?

Bacteria and blue-green algae

How do organisms in the Kingdom Protista differ from those in the Kingdom Monera?

They have a well-defined nucleus enclosed in a nuclear membrane.

Which Kingdom includes organisms that can be autotrophic?

Both Monera and Protista

What observation is associated with the Kingdom Fungi activity?

Fine cotton thread-like tufts.

Study Notes

Kingdom 1: Monera

  • Monera includes all types of bacteria and blue green algae.
  • Lactobacilli bacteria are rod-like microbes that can be observed under a compound microscope in a mixture of curd or buttermilk and water.
  • Characteristics of Monera:
    • Unicellular organisms
    • Can be autotrophic or heterotrophic
    • Prokaryotic cells without distinct nucleus or cell organelles

Kingdom 2: Protista

  • Protista are single-celled organisms that can be observed in pond water under a microscope.
  • Amoebae are motile microbes with irregular shape that can be found in pond water.
  • Characteristics of Protista:
    • Single-celled organisms with well-defined nucleus enclosed in a nuclear membrane
    • Have pseudopodia, hair-like cilia, or whip-like flagella for locomotion
    • Can be autotrophic (e.g. Euglena, Volvox) or heterotrophic (e.g. Amoeba, Paramoecium)

Kingdom 3: Fungi

  • Fungi grow as fine cotton thread-like tufts on moist bread or bhakri after 2-3 days.
  • National Institute of Virology, Pune, founded in 1952, conducts research on fungi.

Observe lactobacilli bacteria under a microscope and learn about the characteristics of Kingdom Monera, including unicellular organisms that can be autotrophic or heterotrophic.
