Study Notes
The Scientific Method
- Science constantly asks questions based on observations, seeking explanations of natural phenomena.
- The scientific method is an empirical process used to understand the world.
- The scientific method involves multiple steps, starting with observation.
Steps of the Scientific Method
- Observation: Gathering information, recorded observations are data. Data types include qualitative (descriptions) and quantitative (numerical measurements).
- Question: Asking a question based on observations.
- Form a Hypothesis: A tentative answer to the question, based on existing data. It must be testable and lead to predictions.
- Make Predictions: What will happen if the hypothesis is correct? These predictions should be testable.
- Test Hypothesis (Experiment): Designing experiments to test hypothesis through manipulating variables. Compare experimental and control groups, usually differing by one factor.
- Examine Test Results and Form a Conclusion: Analyzing the data collected during testing whether the hypothesis is supported or not.
Scientific Method: Theories
- Scientific theories are broader than hypotheses, encompassing multiple related hypotheses.
- They offer broad explanations developed through extensive research and evidence.
- Cell theory is an example of a scientific theory (all living things are composed of one or more cells, the cell is the basic functional and structural unit of all living things and new cells arise from pre-existing cells).
Types of Reasoning
-
Inductive Reasoning: Starts with specific observations, leading to a general conclusion e.g., (observation, pattern recognition, hypothesis, experiment, conclusion).
-
Deductive Reasoning: Starts with a general concept and progresses toward specific predictions. e.g.,(Theory, Hypothesis, Data, Data analysis, Hypothesis acceptance/rejection).
The Scientific Method: Case Study (Snowshoe Hare)
- Observation: Snowshoe hares change color seasonally.
- Question: Why do snowshoe hares change color seasonally?
- Hypothesis: White hares are less preyed upon in winter than dark coloured hares; and vice-versa in summer.
- Prediction: If dark hares were released in winter, they would be preyed on more successfully than white hares. Conversely, dark hares would be more vulnerable to predation in summer compared to white hares
- Experiment: Experiments would be needed to test this hypothesis, including observations of actual predation incidents.
- Conclusion: Seasonal color molting is a camouflage mechanism.
Science Dissemination
- Effective scientific communication involves clear, accessible, and meaningful presentation of research findings to the scientific community, industry, and policy-makers, and the broader community.
- Channels for dissemination include peer-reviewed papers, original research, conferences, reports, public lectures, webinars, news outlets, and social media platforms.
Scientific Method: Core Principles
- Purpose: Investigates phenomena through empirical inquiry.
- Process: Observation, questioning, hypothesis testing, prediction, and conclusion.
- Reasoning: Uses both inductive and deductive approaches.
- Adaptability: Evolves based on new evidence.
- Communication: Involves sharing findings and resolving misinformation.
Group Activity: Scientific Method
- Students will work in groups of approximately seven to discuss, brainstorm, formulate a hypothesis, make predictions, design, and test experiments.
- The experiment design and findings should be posted on an appropriate forum.
