Study Notes
Dislocations
- Occur more frequently in the shoulder for adults and the elbow for children.
- Characterized by deformity, severe pain, and swelling.
- Do not attempt to reposition the bone; treat as a fracture.
Sprains
- Injury to ligaments (tissues connecting bones in a joint).
- Common in ankles and wrists.
- Treat with ice and elevation.
Strains
- Injury to overstretched muscles or tendons ("pulled muscle").
- Frequent in lower back and leg muscles.
- Treat with ice and elevation. Differ from sprains in that they affect muscles/tendons, not ligaments.
Fractures
- Two types: open (bone protrudes through skin) and closed (skin intact).
- Symptoms: severe pain (especially with movement), swelling, deformity, decreased sensation, potential inability to move limb.
- Femur fractures are life-threatening due to potential arterial severing and blood loss.
- Lower leg fractures may be less outwardly obvious but still cause severe pain, swelling, tenderness, and bruising.
- Maintain the patient's position of comfort and support the affected extremity. For ankle injuries with boots, leave the boots in place but loosen laces.
Amputations
- Complete or partial loss of a limb or body part.
- Complete/partial amputations may require a tourniquet applied high and tight above the wound, but not over a joint.
- Finger/toe amputations require direct pressure, not a tourniquet.
- Do not delay treatment to search for the amputated part, however, when found: wrap it (each part separately if multiple), place in a plastic bag, keep cool (but not directly on ice).
