Study Notes
Human Anatomy
- The study of the physical structure of humans
- Aim: To correctly use terminology to describe the anatomical relationships between body structures
Anatomical Position
- Standing upright
- Facing forward
- Arms at the side with palms facing forward
- Feet slightly apart
Directional Terms & References
- Medial: Nearer to the midline of the body
- Lateral: Further from the midline of the body or at the side
- Proximal: Nearer to a point of attachment of a limb or nearer to the center of the body
- Distal: Further from the point of attachment of a limb or further from the center of the body
- Anterior or Ventral: Nearer the front
- Posterior or Dorsal: Nearer the back
- Superior: Nearer the head
- Inferior: Further from the head
Body Planes
- Three planes that are perpendicular to each other
- Sagittal: Divides the body into left and right portions. Mid-sagittal divides the body into equal left and right halves.
- Transverse: Divides the body into superior (top) and inferior (bottom) portions
- Frontal/Coronal: Divides the body into anterior (front) and posterior (back) portions
Oral Perspective
- Dorsum of tongue: Top surface of the tongue
- Ventral surface of tongue: Bottom surface of the tongue
- Lateral border of the tongue: Sides of the tongue
Summary
- Be familiar with anatomical terms and concepts
- Build a glossary to refer to and add new terms as you learn them
- Pay attention to crossover between oral anatomy and terminology
Learning Check
- Left hand is holding the ball
- The ears are lateral to the nose
- The elbow is proximal to the wrist
- The ankle is distal to the knee
- The skull is superior to the neck
- The sternum (breastbone) is anterior to the vertebrae
- The knees are inferior to the chin
- The wrist is proximal to the hand
- The nose is anterior to the ears
- The heart is anterior to the spinal cord
