Study Notes
Anatomical Terminology
- Anterior (ventral) refers to the front of the body, while posterior (dorsal) indicates the back.
- Superior means above or higher, and inferior means below or lower.
- Medial refers to the middle or towards the midline, whereas lateral suggests away from the midline.
- Superficial indicates closer to the surface of the body, while deep refers to further away from the surface.
- Proximal describes a position closer to the point of attachment, and distal indicates further away.
The True Anatomical Position
- The body is in an erect position, standing upright.
- In the upper limbs, arms are slightly positioned away from the body with forearms in supination, palms facing forward, and thumbs pointed laterally.
- Lower limbs are positioned with feet close together.
Anatomical Planes
- Coronal plane divides the body into anterior (front) and posterior (back) parts.
-
Sagittal plane segregates the body into right and left sections, classified into:
- Median sagittal plane which cuts through the midline of the body.
- Lateral sagittal plane which is positioned away from the midline.
- Transverse plane separates the body into upper and lower sections.
Movements of Upper Limb
- Focus on the movements and range of motion at the shoulder joint.
