Communities

  • Traditional communities: self-sufficient, no money, people provide for themselves, simpler lives, men hunted, women gathered, shelters built from natural materials, clothes made from animal skins or plant fibers.
  • Modern communities: people work to earn money, use technology to communicate and produce goods, located in cities or towns, industrialized, trade daily.

Traditional Societies

  • People meet their own needs, grow their own food, keep cattle and sheep, no initial need for money.
  • Gradually began to trade, exchanging goods, later with other communities for products they didn't have, e.g. iron.

Modern Societies

  • People have specialized skills, rely on others to produce goods and services, use coins, notes, debit/credit cards, and electronic banking.
  • Located in cities or larger towns, industrialized, trade daily.

Bartering

  • Exchanging goods and services without using money, through negotiations.
  • Traditional societies used bartering when they needed goods or services they couldn't get or make themselves.
  • Example: exchanging a bag of potatoes for a container of milk.

Advantages of Bartering

  • Different goods can be exchanged for other goods.
  • No wastage of products.
  • Bartering is for everyone, not just the rich.
  • Participation is open to all.

Disadvantages of Bartering

  • Not always practical.
  • Hard to get what you need.
  • Difficult to carry or transport some items.
  • No common value measure.
  • Certain goods can't be divided into smaller units.
  • No late payments allowed.
  • Storing goods was difficult.
  • Hard to determine the actual value of items due to varying values.
