History and Definition of Health Science
- Health Science is the study of human and animal health, applying knowledge from pure science to practical healthcare practices.
- Health is defined as the state of complete physical, mental and social well-being, not merely the absence of disease or infirmity (WHO 1946).
- Wellness is an active process of making choices towards a more successful existence, encompassing physical, emotional, intellectual, spiritual, occupational, social and environmental well-being.
- Health Care embraces all goods and services to promote health, including preventive, curative and palliative interventions.
- Palliative Care is the active total care of patients who are not responding to curative treatment, focusing on pain and symptom management, psychological and social support.
- Public Health encompasses all organized measures to prevent disease, promote health and prolong life among the population. It focuses on communities and aims to create conditions that support health.
Mental Health
- Mental Health is the successful performance of mental functions, leading to productive activities, fulfilling relationships, and the ability to adapt to change and cope with adversity.
- Stress is a response triggered by situations that cause physical and emotional reactions. It can be positive (eustress) or negative (distress).
-
General Adaptation Syndrome (GAS) is a three-stage response to stress:
- Alarm: The body prepares for flight-or-fight, increasing susceptibility to disease or injury.
- Resistance: The body develops new homeostasis, becoming more resistant to disease and injury.
- Exhaustion: Prolonged stress depletes energy reserves, leading to a life-threatening physiological state.
Psychoneuroimmunology
- Psychoneuroimmunology studies the interaction between the nervous, endocrine and immune systems.
- Stress Hormones (Cortisol): Long-term stress leads to increased cortisol secretion, which can suppress the immune system.
Allostatic Load
- Allostatic Load: Introduced by Bruce McEwen & Eliot Stellar in 1993, it measures the long-term wear and tear of the stress response, caused by repeated or prolonged stress.
- Allostatic Overload: This is a state of unsustainable physiological imbalance, increasing vulnerability to disease and mental health issues.
