Study Notes

Hair Anatomy

  • The cuticle is the outermost layer of the hair, providing protection
  • The cortex is the middle layer, responsible for strength, color, and texture
  • The medulla is the innermost layer of the hair shaft
  • The hair shaft is the visible part of the hair that protrudes from the skin

Hair Composition

  • Hair is made up of amino acids, protein, and molecular bonds

Types of Bonds

  • Hydrogen bonds: temporary, weakest, and can be broken by water or heat
  • Ionic (salt) bonds: temporary, stronger than hydrogen bonds, but can be weakened by pH changes
  • Covalent (disulfide) bonds: permanent, strongest, but can be broken by harsh processes like bleaching or excessive heat-styling

Olaplex

  • Olaplex rebuilds disulfide bonds with its patented ingredient, Bis-Aminopropyl diglycol dimaleate (Bis-Amino)
  • Olaplex can be used on curly, chemically altered, and virgin hair
  • Olaplex No.1 should be used in conjunction with Olaplex No.2, not the other way around

Using Olaplex Standalone In-Treatment

  • Use the correct amount of Olaplex No.1 measured with a dosing dispenser
  • Apply to clean, dry hair, or damp, towel-dried hair, and leave on for 5 minutes
  • Apply Olaplex No.2 from root to end, and leave on for 10 minutes before rinsing
  • Follow up with Olaplex No.4 Bond Maintenance Shampoo and Olaplex No.5 Bond Maintenance Conditioner

K18 Molecular Repair

  • Engineered to reverse hair damage in 4 minutes and deliver lasting hair health
  • K8 PEPTIDE PREP™ delivers cleaner, healthier hair after one wash
  • Detox Shampoo removes 99% product buildup, 95% sebum, and 76% copper
  • Ph Maintenance Shampoo has an optimized pH to reduce excess cuticle swelling and preserve color and health

Using K18 Professional Molecular Repair Hair Mask

  • Apply 1-3 pumps starting at the ends and working up towards the roots
  • Wait 4 minutes for the K18Peptide to take effect

Test your knowledge of the different layers of hair, including the cuticle, cortex, and medulla, as well as the composition of hair and the types of molecular bonds that hold it together. From amino acids to hydrogen bonds, see how well you understand the science behind hair anatomy.
