What is mitosis
What is mitosis
Mitosis is the process of cell division in which a single cell divides to produce two identical daughter cells. It is essential for growth, development, and tissue repair in multicellular organisms.
Phases of Mitosis:
-
Prophase – Chromosomes condense, spindle fibers form, and the nuclear membrane starts to break down.
-
Metaphase – Chromosomes line up in the middle of the cell.
-
Anaphase – Sister chromatids are pulled apart to opposite sides of the cell.
-
Telophase – Nuclear membranes reform around the separated chromosomes.
-
Cytokinesis – The cytoplasm splits, completing cell division.
Mitosis ensures that new cells have the same genetic information as the original cell. It differs from meiosis, which produces gametes (sperm and eggs) with half the number of chromosomes.
