Good Samaritan Laws

- No compensation for care is permitted
- Negligence or exceeding scope of practice is prohibited
- Four key elements include:
- Permission of the ill/injured person
- Appropriate (non-reckless) care
- The person being cared for didn't cause the accident
- Emergency care given before trained help arrives

- Aspiration: Foreign substance enters lungs (food, liquid, etc.)
- Two types:
- Overt aspiration: Noticeable symptoms: sudden cough, wheezing, trouble breathing, congestion, heartburn, throat clearing, chest discomfort, decreased oxygen saturation
- Silent aspiration: No obvious symptoms; look for fever, low oxygen saturation, rapid breathing (tachypnea) – common signs of pneumonia
Tube Feedings
- Keep the head of the bed elevated 30 degrees
- Pause feedings during care or when lying the patient flat
Urinary Catheterization
- Urinary catheter: Flexible tube placed in bladder to drain urine
- Placement through urethra or surgically created opening in lower abdomen
