The evolution of data warehousing dates back to the 1960s with the development of the terms dimensions and facts. It further progressed through the introduction of dimensional data marts for retail sales in the 1970s, and the introduction of a database management system specifically for decision support by Tera Data Corporation in 1983. Data warehousing as we know it today started in the late 1980s with the development of the Business Data Warehouse by IBM workers Paul Murphy and Barry Devlin, and further advancements were made by Inmon Bill, considered the father of data warehousing, who wrote extensively on building, using, and maintaining the warehouse and the Corporate Information Factory.
