Female Reproductive System Overview
- The female reproductive system includes ovaries, oviducts, uterus, cervix, vagina, external genitalia, and mammary glands
- These parts work together for ovulation, fertilization, pregnancy, birth, and child care
Ovaries
- Primary female sex organs
- Produce female gametes (ova) and ovarian hormones
- Located on either side of the lower abdomen
- Approximately 2-4 cm in length
- Connected to pelvic wall and uterus by ligaments
- Covered by thin epithelium, enclosing ovarian stroma
- Stroma divided into cortex and medulla
Oviducts (Fallopian Tubes)
- Part of the female accessory ducts
- About 10-12 cm long
- Extend from ovary to uterus
- Funnel-shaped infundibulum near ovary with fimbriae (finger-like projections) to collect ovum
- Wider ampulla connects to the narrow isthmus, which joins the uterus
Uterus
- Single organ, also called the womb
- Pear-shaped
- Supported by ligaments attached to the pelvic wall
- Opens into vagina via cervix
- Cervical canal (cavity of cervix) with vagina forming birth canal
- Wall has three layers: perimetrium (thin membrane), myometrium (thick muscle layer), and endometrium (inner glandular layer)
- Endometrium changes during menstrual cycle; myometrium contracts during birth
External Genitalia
- Includes mons pubis, labia majora, labia minora, hymen, and clitoris
- Mons pubis: fatty tissue cushion covered by skin and pubic hair
- Labia majora: fleshy folds surrounding vaginal opening
- Labia minora: paired folds under labia majora
- Hymen: membrane partially covering vaginal opening (often torn during intercourse, but not reliable indicator of virginity)
- Clitoris: small, finger-like structure at upper junction of labia minora above urethral opening
Mammary Glands
- Paired structures (breasts) containing glandular tissue and fat
- Divided into 15-20 mammary lobes with alveoli (clusters of cells)
- Alveoli secrete milk stored in alveoli lumens (cavities)
- Alveoli connect to mammary tubules that join to form mammary ducts
- Several ducts join to form a wider mammary ampulla connected to lactiferous duct, allowing milk removal
