    Study Notes

    Chapter XIV: Digital Multiplexing Equipment

    • Digital multiplexing equipment currently uses Synchronous Digital Hierarchy (SDH), specifically STM-1, STM-4, and STM-16.
    • Future systems will use IP-MPLS technology.
    • Transmission media includes symmetric cable pairs, HDSL, star quad cable in electrified areas, and optical fiber.
    • Primary multiplexing equipment multiplexes 30 analogue and/or data channels into a 2048 Kbps ITU-compatible digital stream.
    • This equipment also demultiplexes the 2048 Kbps stream into 30 analogue voice/data channels.
    • Terminal MUX has one 2048 Kbps port per direction (transmit and receive) and is used as an end multiplexer.
    • Primary Drop/Insert MUX has at least two 2048 Kbps ports (P1 and P2) for sending and receiving signals. It enables dropping or inserting channels or making time slots between P1/P2 ports.
    • Drop/Insert MUX with Conference Facility has an additional capability for three-party conferences between time slots on ports P1 or P2 and voice interface.
    • Primary multiplexers include various interface cards such as 2W speech cards, 4W speech cards, exchange end cards, and subscriber side interface cards. Other types include hotline interface cards, Digital Subscriber Line Interface cards, Network Termination Unit/Remote Data Unit, and various Data Interface cards (e.g., G703, NX64 Kbps).
    • Digital multiplexing equipment specifications conform to RDSO (Research Designs and Standards Organisation) specifications.

    Characteristics of Interfaces

    • Bit rate, Code, output and input port characteristics for various interfaces vary, including 2048 Kbit/s ±50 PPM and HDB3.
    • Output ports, for example, have rectangular pulse shapes, specific peak voltages/impedances and normal pulse widths.
    • Input ports have permissible attenuation, return loss, frequency, and specific error requirements.

    System Performance Requirements

    • System designs meet ITU-T parameters and aim for 99.5% system availability.
    • Audio frequency (4W/2W) interface characteristics are measured according to ITU-T G.712 requirements.

    Synchronization

    • Equipment derives timing signals from internal, external, and incoming digital signal tributaries.
    • Automatic switching between timing sources occurs in case of primary source failure.
    • Synchronization schemes are per approved standards.

    Frame Structure (2048 Kbps)

    • Frame structure conforms to ITU-T recommendations (G.704/G.732).
    • Frame consists of 32 time slots (0-31).
    • Time slot 0 is for frame synchronization and alarms.
    • Time slot 16 is for channel signaling (1 to 15 and 16 to 31).
    • Remaining slots are for speech or data.

    Fault Conditions & Actions

    • Maintenance of primary and STM1 equipment must coordinate with telecom staff.
    • Specific alarm indicators (e.g., Power supply failed, Loss of incoming signals, Loss of frame alignment, Excessive error ratio, Remote failure, Loss of transmit clock) are common.

    Maintenance

    • Each piece of equipment has detailed maintenance procedures.
    • Electrostatic discharge precautions should be followed.
    • Maintenance schedule covers several critical components and checks, such as alarm checks, voltage checks, audio level checks, idle channel noise, signalling, operations (E&M, exchange circuits), circuit total distortion, and similar.

    Digital Cross-Connect (14.3.7)

    • Digital Cross-Connect (DCC) is provided to facilitate channel-level cross-connects, using 4-port to 32-port configurations.
    • DCC is important for operational flexibility.

Room Sizes and Spacing (14.3.8(i), (ii))

    • Equipment room layout must allow for sufficient movement space for doors and routine equipment checks.
    • Clearance between the ceiling, cable carrier, and rack should be at least 30 cm.
    • Clearance between equipment racks or other equipment and walls should be at least 2 meters.

    Other Important Information

    • Equipment operation is at 48 VDC positive earth and often uses a shared power supply arrangement.
    • Various annexures provide specific data lists (e.g., Power Supply, Air Conditioner, Fire Alarm, Earthing) for checking/maintenance.
