Esomeprazole
- Reduces the amount of acid in the stomach
- Used to treat:
- Indigestion, heartburn, and acid reflux
- Gastro-oesophageal reflux disease (GORD)
- Stomach ulcers
- Zollinger-Ellison syndrome (rare condition caused by a tumour in the pancreas or gut)
Dosage and Strength
- Available in 20mg and 40mg tablets, capsules, and granules
- Typical dose:
- Heartburn and acid reflux: 20mg a day
- Gastro-oesophageal reflux disease: 20mg to 40mg a day
- Stomach ulcers: 20mg a day
- Zollinger-Ellison syndrome: 80mg a day (can increase to 160mg a day)
How to Take
- Take once a day, in the morning, with or without food
- Swallow tablets and capsules whole with a drink of water
- If taking granules, mix with water and drink straight away
Common Side Effects
- Headache
- Diarrhoea
- Stomach pain
- Dizziness or sleepiness
- Blurred vision
Serious Side Effects
- Liver problems (jaundice, dark urine, tiredness)
- Joint pain with skin rash (subacute cutaneous lupus erythematosus)
- Diarrhoea that does not improve
- Serious allergic reaction (anaphylaxis)
Long-term Side Effects
- Low magnesium levels (tiredness, confusion, dizziness)
- Bone fractures
- Gut infections
- Vitamin B12 deficiency
