6 Questions

What is the main cause of a rain-induced landslide?

The material on cliffs or steep slopes losing support or becoming fractured from the main rock

What type of movement is characteristic of a rain-induced landslide?

A rotating motion around a point of axis

Which of the following is NOT a type of rain-induced landslide?

Earthquake-induced landslide

What is the common feature of all rain-induced landslides?

The material loses support or becomes fractured

Which type of rain-induced landslide involves the material flowing like a viscous liquid?

Debris flow

Which type of rain-induced landslide involves the material extending or spreading laterally?

Lateral spreading

Study Notes

Definition of Landslide

  • Downslope movement of soil, rock, and organic materials under the effect of gravity and also the landform that results from such movement.

Types of Landslides

  • Block Fall: A block of material is detached from a steep slope such as a cliff and moves forward and downward around a point of axis (rotating motion).
  • Slide: Occurs when the detached mass of materials such as rocks, soil, and sometimes organic matter moves along a downward-sloping surface.
  • Flow: Occurs when materials from (usually) gentle slopes are detached and flow like a viscous liquid along a surface.
  • Lateral Spreads: Occurs when the mass of soil or rocks extends or spreads laterally, often observed when there is liquefaction or an earthquake.

Characteristics of Rain-Induced Landslide

  • Material on cliffs or steep slopes loses support or becomes fractured from the main rock.
  • Can occur when a block of material is detached from a steep slope.
  • Involves the movement of soil, rock, and organic materials under the effect of gravity.

Learn about rainfall-induced landslides, the downslope movement of soil, rock, and organic materials caused by gravity. Explore the formation of landforms resulting from such movements, as well as the process of material detachment and movement on steep slopes.
