Classification
- Doxycycline is classified as an Antibiotic, specifically within the Tetracycline class.
Availability
- Formulations available: Capsules and Tablets at 50mg, 75mg, and 100mg; Injectable form at 200mg.
- Dosing for adults and children: Start at 100mg every 12 hours on the first day, followed by 100mg per day.
- Maximum daily dosage is 100mg.
Mechanism of Action
- Doxycycline acts by inhibiting protein synthesis in bacteria, effectively stopping their growth.
Clinical Uses
- Effective for treating chlamydial and mycoplasma infections, gonorrhea, and syphilis in patients allergic to penicillin.
- Also used for rickettsial diseases and acute exacerbations of chronic bronchitis.
- Unlabeled uses include treatment of pelvic inflammatory disease (PID), prophylaxis for rape victims, management of malignant pleural effusion, and post-exposure treatment and prophylaxis for anthrax.
Contraindications
- Avoid in patients with hypersensitivity to any tetracycline.
- Not recommended during tooth development, the last half of pregnancy, lactation, or in children under 8 years old, unless used for anthrax exposure.
Adverse Effects
- Common side effect: nausea.
- Other effects may include interference with color vision, enterocolitis, esophageal irritation, and photosensitivity.
Nursing Implications
- Monitor for sudden onset of painful swallowing and signs/symptoms of superinfection.
- Provide patient and family education: advise avoidance of direct sunlight, instruct to take with 8 oz of water, and to wait 1 hour before lying down after taking the medication.
