Doxycycline Overview

  • Generic Name: Doxycycline
  • Trade Names include: Apo-Doxy, Doryx, Doxy, Doxycin, Monodox, Novodoxylin, Vibramycin, Vibra Tabs

Classification

  • Doxycycline is classified as an Antibiotic, specifically within the Tetracycline class.

Availability

  • Formulations available: Capsules and Tablets at 50mg, 75mg, and 100mg; Injectable form at 200mg.
  • Dosing for adults and children: Start at 100mg every 12 hours on the first day, followed by 100mg per day.
  • Maximum daily dosage is 100mg.

Mechanism of Action

  • Doxycycline acts by inhibiting protein synthesis in bacteria, effectively stopping their growth.

Clinical Uses

  • Effective for treating chlamydial and mycoplasma infections, gonorrhea, and syphilis in patients allergic to penicillin.

  • Other effects may include interference with color vision, enterocolitis, esophageal irritation, and photosensitivity.

  • Monitor for sudden onset of painful swallowing and signs/symptoms of superinfection.
