Defensive Tactics: Escorts and Transporters
- Lesson Goal: Demonstrate proper escort and transporter techniques.
- Officers may encounter: Subjects who refuse commands without physical resistance.
- Techniques used: Pain compliance, mechanical compliance, joint manipulation are used. These are called escorts and transporters, fundamental in takedowns.
- Awareness: Always be aware of weapon proximity to the subject when using techniques.
- Escorts: A technique to move a subject from one location to another without pain compliance.

Escort Position Principles:
- Use clear verbal commands during technique application.
- Must maintain an appropriate stance.
- Simultaneously grasp the subject's wrist and upper arm above the elbow.
- Turn the subject's palm to face you.
- Move the subject, or take appropriate action (Refer to Figure 4-21).

Transporters: Techniques to move subjects using pain or mechanical compliance. Examples: Hammer Lock and Shoulder Lock.

Hammer Lock:
- Used when subjects pull away from the escort position.
- Involves pain and mechanical compliance, moving arm behind the back.
- Can be used on handcuffed subjects.
- Use loud and clear verbal commands.
- Begin from the escort position.
- Strike or diversion may be necessary.
- Mirror the hand and rotate to sweep behind back
