Data Life Cycle
-
Phases:
- Sourcing: Gathering data from various sources (external data acquisition or creating data)
- Storage & Preparation: Storing, maintaining, and preparing data for use
- Protection & Usage: Applying data to enterprise tasks while protecting data
- Sharing: Distributing data to internal and external users
- Archiving: Storing data no longer actively used for a defined period
- Destruction: Removing all copies of data from the enterprise
-
Processes within each phase:
- Sourcing: Obtain data externally, create data, receive data signals
- Storage & Preparation: Move and store data, cleanse and enrich data, transform and synthesize data, integrate data
- Protection & Usage: Apply data to enterprise tasks, protect, monitor and audit usage, search, classify, and explore data, model and analyze data
- Sharing: Data publication, visualization, data sharing, moving and copying data, delivering data products to customers
- Archiving: Copying data into archive, removing archived data from active environments
- Destruction: Permanently destroying data
DAMA and DMBOK
- DAMA International: A not-for-profit, vendor-independent, global association for information and data management professionals.
- DAMA DMBOK®: The Data Management Association's Data Management Body of Knowledge.
DMBOK Knowledge Areas
- Data Governance: Planning, oversight, and control over the management of data and related resources.
- Data Architecture: The overall structure of data and data-related resources as an integral part of the enterprise architecture.
- Data Modeling & Design: analysis, design, building, testing, and maintenance of data structures.
- Includes conceptual, logical and physical data modeling
- Includes master data modeling
- Includes modeling and design across various architectures (data warehouse, data lake, cloud data storage, etc. )
- Data Storage & Operations: Deployment and management of structured physical data assets storage.
- Data Security: Ensuring privacy, confidentiality and appropriate access to data
- Focuses on aspects of privacy, security and access management
- Includes security governance (monitoring, audit, breach responses)
- Includes data protection (encryption)
- Data Integration & Interoperability: Acquisition, extraction, transformation, movement, delivery, replication, federation, virtualization, and operational support of data assets
- Documents & Content: Storing, protecting, indexing, and enabling access to data. Includes:
- Content management (classification, tagging, indexing)
- Managing physical documents.
- Managing electronic records (documents, images, scans, multimedia)
- Reference & Master Data: Managing shared data to reduce redundancy and ensure data quality.
- Data Warehousing & Business Intelligence: Managing analytical data processing and enabling access to decision support data. Includes:
- Data profiling and warehousing
- Data discovery, searching and querying
- Operational and analytical reporting
- Analytics
- Metadata: Collecting, categorizing, maintaining, integrating, controlling, managing, and delivering metadata (information about data). It includes:
- Business glossary / data dictionary
- Data classification
The Five C's of Good Data
- Clean: Accurate, no missing data points, conforms to required formats; no invalid entries
- Consistent: Follows the same standards, definitions, and use codes; reflects the same meaning
- Conformed: Shareable across dimensions with the same business meaning
- Current: As recent as required for business purposes
- Comprehensive: Sufficient and complete for its intended purpose
XML Data Format
- XML (Extensible Markup Language): Text-based format used to share data using tags to describe data
- XML is case sensitive; tags must use the same capitalization
- Tag names must begin with a letter, underscore, or colon, may contain letters, digits, and underscores. No spaces, colons, dashes, or periods.
- Tags for XML data have starting and closing tags
- XML has a well-defined structure; follows rules.
- Special characters in XML need to be represented with special characters.
- Attributes can be included in XML tags and can contain multiple attributes
