Anatomy of a CV
- Heading: Includes name, address, phone number, and email; current versus permanent address; appropriate email address.
- Objective: (Optional) Communicates desired career goals; e.g., a pharmacy internship position to enhance education and practice experience.
- Education: Listed in reverse chronological order; includes name of institution, city and state, degree, majors/minors, month/year earned (or anticipated), and GPA (if above 3.0). May also include specialized coursework or academic honors as separate sections.
- Professional Experience: Includes full-time and related/additional experience; name of organization, city and state, title, start and end dates (or Present), and a description of duties and achievements using bulleted accomplishment statements (usually 2-5 per experience). Separately list IPPE and APPE rotations, including schedule, titles/preceptors/credentials.
- Presentations: Includes date, title, and audience.
- Research & Publication: Demonstrates research and writing abilities.
- Honors & Awards: Recognizes achievements in an educational or professional setting.
- Membership in Organizations: Lists professional organization memberships, and the level of involvement, and leadership roles in special projects using accomplishment verbs.
- Professional & Community Service: Details dedication to field, titles and dates of offices held, and leadership roles (projects).
- Special Skills or Expertise: Includes any special skills or expertise.
- References: A separate document with name, contact information and relationship.
Formatting Tips
- Proofread: Multiple times for accuracy.
- Readability: Ensure text is easy to understand.
- Paper: Use white or ivory, heavy-bond paper.
- Font: Use 10-14 pt. font (Arial or Times New Roman)
- Consistency: Apply consistent formatting across all sections.
- Header Treatment: Consistent header treatments
- Margins: Appropriate margins.
- Indentation: Consistent indentation for each category
- Emphasis: Use underlining or boldface for important elements
Mistakes to Avoid
