Cranial Nerves
- There are 12 cranial nerves, each with distinct functions and components.
Olfactory Nerve (I)
- Responsible for sensing smells.
Optic Nerve (II)
- Responsible for vision.
Eye Movement and Control
- Oculomotor Nerve (III) and Trochlear Nerve (IV): control extrinsic eye muscles.
- Abducens Nerve (VI): controls eye abduction muscles.
Trigeminal Nerve (V)
- Has three branches: Ophthalmic, Maxillary, and Mandibular.
- Ophthalmic branch: senses cornea, nasal mucosa, and face skin.
- Maxillary branch: senses skin of face, oral cavity, and teeth.
- Mandibular branch: controls muscles of mastication and senses face skin, teeth, and tongue (general sensation).
Facial Expressions and Taste
- Facial Nerve (VII): controls muscles of facial expression and senses part of tongue (taste).
Hearing and Balance
- Vestibulocochlear Nerve (VIII): senses hearing and equilibrium.
Swallowing and Speech
- Glossopharyngeal Nerve (IX): controls stylopharyngeus muscle and senses tongue (general and taste) and pharynx.
- Vagus Nerve (X): controls pharynx, larynx, and senses pharynx, larynx, and abdominal organs.
Neck and Shoulder Movement
- Accessory Nerve (XI): controls trapezius and sternocleidomastoid muscles.
Tongue Movement
- Hypoglossal Nerve (XII): controls tongue muscles.
