Communication
- Communication is the medium through which culture is transmitted and preserved.
- Both verbal and non-verbal communication are learned culturally.
- Space refers to the distance between individuals when they interact.
- Rules regarding personal distance vary from culture to culture.
- Territoriality refers to feeling or an attitude toward one’s personal area.
- Personal space refers to the distance people prefer in interaction with others.

Transcultural Nursing
- Transcultural Nursing Theory was developed by Madeleine Leininger.
- It borrows concepts from anthropology, the study of human behavior, cultures, and societies.
- Culture is learned, shared and transmitted values, beliefs, norms and lifeways of a particular group that guides the thinking, decisions and actions in patterned ways.
- Biological variations include genetic differences, growth patterns, body systems, racial anatomical characteristics, and disease prevalence.
- Transcultural refers to extending through more than one human culture, while multicultural refers to several different cultures.
- The Purnell Model for Cultural Competence captures different aspects related to communication, relationship development, and religion.
- Cultural competence involves five stages: cultural awareness, cultural knowledge, cultural skill, cultural desire, and cultural encounters.
- Barriers to cultural competence include language, stereotypes and prejudices, signs and symbols, behaviors and beliefs, and “us” versus “them” (ethnocentrism).
Labor Code Employment
- Probationary employment has a maximum of six months.
- After six months, the employee is eligible for regularization.
- For professors in private schools, full-time teachers with three consecutive years of satisfactory service can acquire permanent status.
- Term or fixed employment has a defined period of time, and the contract must be terminated after the period expires.

Additional Remunerations
- Night differentials are paid to employees working between 5:00 am and 6:00 am.
- Overtime work is compensated at the regular wage plus at least 25%.
- Undertime work is work time less than the regular workday.
- Emergency overtime work is required when the country is at war, to prevent loss of life or property, for urgent work, or to prevent damage to perishable goods.
Working Conditions
- Nurses should work 8 hrs a day/40 hours a week (5 days).
- Article 83 states that the normal hours of work for any employee should not exceed 8 hours a day.
- Article 85 mandates that employers provide employees with at least 60 minutes for meals.
- The Right to Weekly Rest Day requires employers to ensure employees get a minimum of 24 consecutive hours after every 6 consecutive workdays.
- The employer determines the weekly rest day, respecting employee preferences based on religious grounds.
- Article 92 allows employees to be required to work on their rest day in case of an emergency, to prevent loss or damage to perishable goods, or when the nature of work requires continuous operations.
- Employees working on a rest day, Sunday, or holiday are entitled to an additional compensation of at least 30% of their regular wage.
