Chapter 5: Vacuum Brake System
- Vacuum Brake System Improvements: The system has been gradually improved by increasing rigging ratio, modifying vacuum brake cylinders, hose pipes, and adopting direct admission valves and slack adjusters. (Figure 5.1)
Maintenance at Workshop
- Periodic Inspection (POH): All brake components are examined, repaired, and replaced as needed.
- Pins and Bushings: Inspect pins and bushings for wear. Replace if radial clearance exceeds 0.75mm.
- Safety Brackets: Ensure safety brackets for brake components are correctly installed and follow approved drawings.
- Vacuum Cylinders: Vacuum cylinders, trunnion brackets, vacuum reservoirs, train pipes, and rubber hose syphon pipes are checked for damage and secured.
- Alarm Chain Apparatus: Examine alarm chain apparatus (including chain, disc, and locking arrangement), brake beams, and brake blocks for proper connections and securement.
- Brake Gear Pins: Chromium-plated brake gear pins must be secured with washers and split cotters.
- Vacuum Gauges: Vacuum gauges are tested and adjusted using master gauges.
Lifting Shop
- Coach Dismantling: Disassemble the vacuum brake system parts after lifting the coach body. Send the parts to the respective maintenance sections.
- Thorough Cleaning: Thorough cleaning in a washing plant is required for all components.
- Train Pipe Leakage Check: Inspect the train pipe for leaks using compressed air at 2 kg/cm² specifically at threaded joints, bends, and points where clamps are fitted, including tee joints and swan necks (with dummy end).
- Train Pipe Repair: Replace corroded, dented, bent (over 10mm), or thin-walled train pipe portions. New pipes should have an anti-corrosive paint coat.
- Brake Pipe Thread Cleaning: Ensure all pipe threads are cleaned and treated with white lead before coupling; clean swan neck grooves.
- Corrosion Control: Parts, including train pipes, should be coated with anti-corrosive paint after repair.
Vacuum Reservoir Straps
- Inspection: Check reservoir straps for slackness, thinning, and damage.
- Replacement: Replace worn or damaged straps or threaded ends.
- Securement: Reservoir straps should be double-secured with spring washers and check nuts.
- Anti-Corrosion Coating: Apply anti-corrosion paint to straps after repairs.
- Reservoir and Safety Straps: Place FRP tissue between the reservoir and safety straps. Additional preparatory steps (APD) may be required.
