    Study Notes

    Chapter 3: Bogies

    • ICF/RCF all-coil bogies are used in mainline BG coaches. Key design details are briefly described.
    • Leading parameters for an ICF bogie are listed in Table 3.1.
    • Maximum axle load bearing is 16.25 tonnes or 13 tonnes.
    • Wheel base is 2896mm.
    • Wheel diameter is 915mm.
    • Axles use telescopic axle guides with oil damping.
    • Primary suspension uses coil springs.
    • Secondary suspension also uses coil springs, with hydraulic shock absorbers.
    • Coach body weight is transferred to the bogie frame via side bearers, spaced 1600mm apart.
    • Side bearers have lubricated metal slides in oil baths.
    • Bogie pivots are only for rotational transmission of tractive/braking forces.
    • Bogie frame construction is all-welded, light construction, with a 2.896-meter wheelbase.
    • Wheel sets have self-aligning spherical roller bearings in cast steel axle box housings.
    • Helical coil springs are used for both primary and secondary suspensions.
    • Bogie bolster helical springs are situated on the lower spring beam.
    • Hydraulic shock absorbers and dashpots are used in the primary and secondary suspensions to damp vertical oscillations.
    • Axle box guides are cylindrical and welded to the bogie side frame.
    • They house the axle box springs and also serve as shock absorbers.
    • Dampers are provided to protect against misalignment from resilient fittings.
    • Dampers are provided for isolating vibration through rubber pads in primary and secondary suspension.
    • The bogies are currently manufactured by ICF/RCF and are all-welded, light-weight construction.

    Bogie Assembly (Figure 3.1)

    • Detailed components are shown in Figure 3.1 of the manual.
    • All-welded light construction is used.
    • Wheel base is 2.896 metres.
    • Wheel sets are mounted with self-aligning spherical roller bearings.
    • Helical coil springs are used in both primary and secondary suspension.

Axle Box Guide with Dash Pot Arrangement (Figures 3.2a & 3.2b)

    • Axle box guides are cylindrical.
    • Guides are welded to the bogie side frame.
    • Guides, along with lower spring seats, house the axle box springs.
    • Guides also act as shock absorbers.
    • These guides are fitted with guide caps with nine 5mm-diameter equidistant holes through which oil in lower spring seat passes.
